ACHS James MacGinley Award for Australian Catholic History

The Award, offered by the Australian Catholic Historical Society, comprises a $500 prize and an offer of publication in the Journal of the Australian Catholic Historical Society.  It is offered by the Society for the purpose of encouraging the study of Australian Catholic history and is funded annually by the MacGinley family in honour of their late father.

Entries are invited from students and recent graduates of Australian universities and theological colleges that offer accredited degree programs, and other persons who are in the early stage of a career as a scholar of Australian Catholic history.

The topic will cover some aspect of Australian Catholic history. The paper must demonstrate originality, excellence in addressing its subject, competence in the use of primary source materials, and clarity of expression.  Prescribed assignment work could well form the basis of an entry. An entry which is part of a larger project, such as a thesis, must be self-contained. The paper must not have been submitted for publication.

Papers must be between 3000 – 5000 words. Each entrant should provide two hard copies of the paper, double-spaced, without the writer’s name, as well as a digital copy. Papers must be accompanied by a completed entry form and the entrant must certify that the paper is their own work and that the materials used or quoted in the text are properly acknowledged. The paper would normally be offered publication in the Journal of the Australian Catholic Historical Society.

The closing date for entries is 31 October each year. Entries are assessed by two senior scholars. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The announcement and presentation of the award would be made in the following year. The Council of the Australian Catholic Historical Society reserves the right not to make an award in any year.
